About Dr. Michael Mcleod

My Story

My Story

I became a therapist because I know firsthand what it is to live in poverty, trauma, emotional and mental struggles. Growing up in a low-income household, I faced daily challenges of financial stress, uncertainty, and emotional strain. While love was a constant in my home, we often lacked the tools to effectively navigate the difficulties we encountered. Consequently, I entered survival mode at a young age, ultimately living on the streets for several years, with little hope for a better tomorrow. These experiences instilled in me a deep understanding of the harsh realities of life when support and resources are scarce. I discovered how transformative it can be when someone truly listens to and acknowledges your pain, trauma, and despair. This profound understanding fueled my passion for a career in mental health. I aspired to be the type of therapist who genuinely comprehends the struggles and suffering others face. I often reflect on how different my journey might have been if my family had access to the resources that could have helped me become a therapist earlier in life. Over the years, I have dedicated myself to extensive training, equipping myself to provide high-quality, compassionate care to individuals from all walks of life, particularly those who have fought hard to survive or who feel unseen, overwhelmed, or lost. Today, I bring both professional expertise and a rich tapestry of life experiences to my practice. My approach is grounded in empathy, authenticity, and collaboration. Whether you are grappling with anxiety, trauma, addiction, relationship challenges, or simply seeking a safe space to be heard, I am here to walk alongside you with unwavering support and genuine compassion. Every individual deserves the opportunity for healing and growth, regardless of their background. If you're ready to embark on this journey together, I am here to help you find your path.

My Training as a Psychotherapist

My training as a psychotherapist has been both rigorous and deeply personal. It’s been shaped by formal study, clinical experience, and a continued commitment to learning — both about others and myself.

I completed my core psychotherapy at Yorkville University, where I studied a range of approaches including psychodynamic, humanistic, and relational theories. Alongside academic study, I undertook clinical placements in community settings, working with clients facing a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties. These early experiences taught me the importance of listening without judgment, being present with pain, and holding space for transformation to unfold at its own pace.

As I moved into private practice, I continued to deepen my skills through regular supervision, ongoing professional development, and personal therapy. I’ve trained in areas such as addiction g. trauma-informed practice, attachment theory, or somatic work], and I remain committed to evolving my practice in line with the needs of the people I work with.

Working in private practice allows me to offer a calm, confidential, and consistent space where you can explore whatever is on your mind — whether that’s past experiences, present challenges, or hopes for the future.

I believe therapy works best when it feels like a collaboration — and I bring warmth, attentiveness, and care to each session, so we can find a pace and a process that feels right for you.
